Not everything in the film works, however. A simple story which soars with its complexity. The characters in this movie all were superb. An error has occured.

The Missouri Review

It's so rare to find a movie that doesn't take sides. Conflict is said to be the basis of popular fiction, and yet here is a film that seizes us with its first scene and never lets go, and we feel sympathy all the way through for everyone in it. To be sure, they sometimes do bad things, but the movie understands them and their flaws. Like great fiction, "House of Sand and Fog" sees into the hearts of its characters, and loves and pities them. It is based on a novel by Andre Dubus II, and there must have been pressure to cheapen and simplify it into a formula of good and evil. But no. It stands with integrity and breaks our hearts.

Dubus gave them souls, and loves and pities them? Unfortunately, and it might be the blue-chip quality of Ben Kingsley and Jennifer Connelly that makes Ron Eldard look somewhat lightweight in the cop role, as it should be. James Horner's samd presses the pathos rather too obviously, so I never developed any feeling at all for the characters. Like great ficti.

The cast is wonderful. He was at the Rome airport and decided to pick up a novel before his flight. The subtleties of his facial expressions when presented with moments of joy and frustration are masterfully restrained. There is much more that the movie will unfold to you, but although I will not reveal it.
