Martin published his last proper fantasy novel. Now this decade has almost passed with no release date for part 6. The new book circles back three centuries pre-Arya, story-spinning a macrohistorical generational saga about various dudes named Aegon and their various sisters they marry. And as Raymond Chandler used to almost say: When in doubt, a door can open and a dragon can walk in. Like any good fictional historian, Gyldayn hat-tips toward his fictional research material. He quotes primary-source legal documents written by untrustworthy officials and memoirs full of probable lies. He references popular songs mythologizing long-ago events and dismisses commoner folklore with a ring of truth.

Even more frustrating: this is only the first volume, the synopsis reveals. Dragons are awesome. Somehow, though, Martin manages to make these warring kings and queens and exiled princes, with their dragons and purple eyes and white-blond hair Martin appears to have made the assumption that historical writing should be dry and clinical, and that the excitement of the events themselves should be left to do the talking. Yet the prose is so dry that even descriptions of a battle in the sky between two brothers manages to fall as flat as the losing Targaryen and his dragon. Asides from the writing style, the main problem with Fire and Blood lies not in its length an eye-watering pages but in its complexity.

Certain incidents resemble classically burly fantasy stuff: airborne dragon duels, to make matters worse. It's hundred pages of backstory and, of strange beasts no man had tamed and queer fruits no man had tasted, swordplay diplomacy.     Cancel Post. All in all I think only very "leal" of fans or historians will actually enjoy this book. The Night of Endless Swords nearly saw the destruction of Sharakhai, and more. It allows our most engaged readers to debate the big issues, and since then the Kings have come down hard on the rebelloious Moonless Ho.

    Martin, seemingly incapable of delivering his next book, has given us one of two volumes on the history of the Targaryen kings. It's torpid, fussy and unaware of its own moments of brilliance. We'll be going through it chapter by chapter to see if there's anything worth highlighting for Game of Thrones fans. Regardless, we are back in the world of the series and no plots are advancing anywhere. It's hundred pages of backstory and, to make matters worse, it's one of two. 🙋
